1 of 1000: The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

Giant clams with a diameter of 1m, hundreds of different colorful fish, huge turtles and reef sharks all visible from the surface while snorkeling – there are only few places in the world where you can enjoy all of that in one day. And the Great Barrier Reef is one of them.

Luckily for us, the Great Barrier Reef is also 1 of the 1000 Places To See Before You Die, so we had to go and see it (with a sarcastic emphasis on ‘had to’). Since Soni doesn’t dive, I got to spend a day diving the Great Barrier Reef before we went together on a snorkeling trip where I got to see the beauty of the reef once again.

The Great Barrier Reef is often called the biggest reef in the world, which is actually not true. Even though the Great Barrier Reef is 2300 km long, it is actually not a single reef, but made up of 2900 reefs and over 1000 islands. (3 of these islands are also part of the 1000 Places To See Before You Die).

The Great Barrier Reef is known for its amazing variety of marine life and crystal clear waters. The further away you go from the coast, the better the visibility gets. Even further out you’ll find the Coral Sea which offers even more marine life and visibilities of up to 50m. On this trip, we didn’t go to the Coral Sea, but believe me, a 4-day diving liveaboard is already on my personal wish list.

I could go on and on about the Great Barrier Reef and its value to our earth, but instead I’ll just show you the pictures we took. You will see that even with our tiny camera and no flash, the colors are as vivid as you’ll ever see them. That’s because you don’t really have to dive to see the beauty of the reef. Even just snorkeling will allow you to see the astounding wonder that is the marine life at the Great Barrier Reef.

Of course, if you decide to go diving (like I did) you get to see a bit more, like a 1m humphead parrot fish or a 2m reef shark. On the outer parts of the reef, you even get to see manta rays, dolphins and sometimes even a whale or two. If that isn’t reason enough to go to the Great Barrier Reef, then I don’t know what is.

Is the Great Barrier Reef really one of the places?

You better believe it. If you just want to snorkel, then a day tour should be enough to see the beauty of the reef. If you are more adventurous and go diving, you might want to go on a liveaboard and see the Coral Sea, too. If you’ve got the money, there are so many more options for you, starting with scenic flights to enjoy the reef with all its beauty and wonderful luxury resorts which probably are nothing short of the Maldives. Well, for the last part we can’t really give you a guarantee as we haven’t been to the luxury resorts ourselves. Yet.
